Friday Books: Addicted

This week's book is Jesus' Son by Denis Johnson.

This is a book of stories, a very quick read. Some of the characters reappear in some stories. The main narrator is always drunk and/or high, stoned, out of reality.

His perceptions are skewed thanks to the influence of whatever drug he happens to be on; this skewed look at the world gets even more off kilter as the book progresses and he becomes more mired in his addictions.

It ends on a hopeful note, which is nice, because I got a little OD'd (pun intended) on the druggie scene. What I loved about this book was the language. It was simple, short, concise, with beautiful metaphors and phrasing that caused me to stop, go back, and re-read portions just for the great use of language. Gifted writing.
