What a Blockhead!

I stayed up late making blocks. It was fun! I hadn't done that in a long time. But it was silly to stay up so late. Now I'm starting out my Saturday feeling tired. I'm a blockhead, but a content one.

above: Sunshine May Lotto blocks. below: block for Sunshine Lotto winner
Question - can anyone read Japanese? If so, click on the block photo below so you can see it larger, and tell me what the words in the white fabric say. I've always wondered..... and would appreciate it if someone can tell me. Actually I think they are the same or similar in the purple fabric, too. Right?

below: block for Friday Block Party. I'm not crazy about this pattern.
It reminds me too much of a swastika. I like my fabrics, though.

I'm a blockhead too. I stayed up way too late reading. I kind of have to agree with you on that bottom block, but I don't think I would have noticed if you hadn't mentioned it.

Have a wonderful Saturday!

From one blockhead to another, let me just say, late night blocks are the best! Love yours!
I agree about this week's Party block. Yours turned out great though!

I agree with the bottom one...but like Melissa I didn't notice! I didn't stay up late and feel pretty good this morning! Heading to Winona! Have a wonderful day and see ya bright and early!

wonder if turning the direction the geese were flying in the challenge block would change how you felt about the block? (having the pinwheel rotating counter clockwise rather than clockwise...) I'll have to play with mine when I get to laying it out and see... :-)

Oh I have done those late nights sewing. lol I like your blocks.

The last block, I think if you change the direction should change the perception.

Carol, I could be wrong, but I suspect the "Japanese" script is just gobbledigook (sp?). I have asked fabric designers before and when I ask, they always say that it "Looks" like real script, but it's not real." I make it a habbit of not using fabric or wearing clothing with words on it I can't read....what if I am saying a horrible thing? When French sayings on clothing was popular (late 80's, early 90's) I wouldn't let my kids wear them...oh, they were mad until the day someone translated a shirt for a friend and it said, basically. "UP yours!" oops!

I've read and caught up with what you have been doing...loved your story about the lady in your group that died....I am sooo guilty of these actions too!

The swastika has been found throughout the world for over three thousand years. A wikipedia search brings up quite an interesting read.

There is also a wonderful vintage top listed on ebay this week that I am tempted to bid on. They list it as a white and pink pinwheel top.

have a great weekend!

I was going to say the same thing as Christine about the swastika--it's an ancient symbol whose real meaning was destroyed when it became the symbol for Nazi evil, and which can never be thought of in any other context, now and forever. I discarded a similar block from a swap once that had the same effect on me--seeing the swastika. But I like your colors too!

Most of the white characters (which are used in Chinese and Japanese) look like they are names. They are all connected with good luck and fortune. Three that I can make out in the purple center square, say PEACE and HAPPINESS and JOY. The characters in the white cloth are combinations (which makes names) and are things like goodness and stillness and contentment etc. (And because my Japanese is somewhat sketchy I confirmed with my husband!)

Now I understand why I wasn't liking the Friday block very much. I kept looking at mine and couldn't figure it out. I guess because I had done each section in a different colour it wasn't as obvious, but as I look at yours it does indeed look like one.
