Yellow Crocus is by Laila Ibrahim. A slave woman in Virginia (1800's) is ordered to become a wet nurse, forcing her to separate from her own 3 month-old infant in order to be the "mammie" to the newborn in the Big House. This story follows both the nurse, Mattie, and the white child, Lisbeth, through their lives. It was a compelling story, a book that I couldn't put down.
There were some wee characterizations issues that left questions in my mind surrounding the two main characters. Otherwise I found it to be an excellent story and thought-provoking.
