Christmas Joys and Sorrows

This is a wonderful time of year. I'm enjoying great times with friends (book group tonight), looking forward to parties and family gatherings, feeling extra love spilling over my already full heart.

Tonight after book group I drove around for a while, taking pictures of Christmas lights. I just love them.

I played around a little, to get different effects.

Mostly I just enjoyed imagining the love and fun that will be happening inside so many houses, around so many beautiful Christmas trees and dining tables.

At the same time, there are many houses that will not be having fun. Some people just won't have fun because they are in bad times or bad life situations. Others have had tragedies happen. Tonight I followed a blog to a blog to a blog and read about an 8-year-old boy who died today of a brain tumor. How incredibly tragic for them! I pray for that family, the out-of-synch families, and anyone who will be alone, sad, cold, hungry or unhappy this Christmas. May the rest of us learn how to spread and share the joy.

Thanks for sharing the lights! And you're right, not all will be with families or friends. An ambulance passed me on my way to work this morning . . .

I have mixed feelings this time of year. A lot of people have high expectations for the holidays and when it doesn't measure up they are down. My mother is very down right now. My head tells me to let her work through it. But my heart wishes she would see what she has and not what she doesn't have.

Beautiful photos ~ we went out light looking the other night but were disappointed to find that many, many folks in our area did not put their lights out this year. Those who did are especially appreciated by us!

Mixed feelings ~ oh, yes. DH's mom passed in October and it feels so strange not to have her involved in our activities. And I do wish that we could all celebrate the season without so much constant commercial perkiness and hype (it takes so much energy to ward it off and stay true to the reasons for the season). Instead of falling prey to the incessant "shoppig monster" we have focused on giving to others in need and nurturing our remaining family...
