Last weekend the knitting/crocheting group from my church went on a retreat. It was our 2nd annual. Such fun! We had a lot of time for laughs, talking, and getting lots of projects done.
I finished this prayer shawl. It is VERY warm!
and my first-ever completed pair of mittens! These fit a child age 8-10.
Here is our table of completed projects and WIPs (Works in Progress)and below that, our gang of yarners.
It was a beautiful weekend. We'll book one again for next year, too!
in which I write about quilts, dreams, everyday life, and almost nothing about giraffes

Winter Beauty .. and Endless Illness
Recently I had a day for running a million errands. One of those errands was to photograph quilts at this fence which is at a historical setting near my neighborhood. It was a beautiful day, but the temperature was about 25 degrees F, so my hands got VERY cold. However, it was fun, because the quilts looked so pretty on this fence, against the snow, stone building, and blue sky. Lately we've had a couple of days in the low 40s! So nice! But I didn't have quilts to photograph then and probably won't until it gets cold again. C'est la vie.
Here are some close-ups. Of the first three, these were all made by other people, but I quilted the one on the left. I made and quilted all the others (some of the blocks were made by my guild members).
The middle three will be sent to the two Sunshine projects (Wrap a Smile and Quilts Beyond Borders), and the last two will go to Wrap Them in Love.
I've had a cold for three weeks now, and I'm still sniffling and coughing. What a nuisance! It's the Winter of the Endless Illness. Well, luckily I feel fairly OK, but I get tired easily due to this stupid cold. I hope I haven't infected a zillion other people. I was careful not to shake hands with anyone today at church. (Though I would hope I long ago passed the point of being contagious, but who really knows?!)

Boutiques and Storms
Our boutique and turkey dinner took place last night. We were very busy! Tons of people came, and we all had a good time. Boutique items were plentiful and varied. So fun! A few of my personal friends came just for the boutique part (not the dinner) and did some shopping. That was fun!

Totals have not yet been officially tallied, but I believe we took in about twice the usual amount of money for our boutique. That is fabulous news! All the money goes to programs we support in this area: transitional housing for women who are facing homelessness and addictions, a neighborhood project that supports many categories of people in need, and a homeless shelter that serves families and helps some of them move into permanent housing.

On a completely different subject, I have been thinking about the change in seasons and the inevitable snow storms we will get here. I have never before worked in a job that is open 24/7. I guess I've been spoiled. I worked in schools that would have snowdays, and I never had to force my little car to drive through the storms to get me safely to work. Now I'm in a job that runs around the clock, and I'm wondering how I'll manage when the storms hit. Our little road is often the last one plowed in this neighborhood, and we only have a shovel. It might be time for a snowblower, something my hubby has adamantly resisted all these years. Should be an interesting winter.
really not looking forward to the arrival of the white stuff

An Old Fashioned Winter
This is a winter like you read about in pioneer stories, when storms raged for days, and they had to tie a rope from the house to the barn so they wouldn't get lost in the white-out conditions.

I'm happily snuggled into my warm house, watching the storm from a safe vantage point. This is a biggie! It has been snowing hard all day, and next will come the wind (to make big ol' snow drifts and snow packs that are impossible to drive through). And the temperatures are going to plunge.

This is a yard stick on my deck. That first number you see is 20, as in 20 inches! And it's still coming down!

This bush is in our front yard... at first I had Christmas lights in these bushes, but the lights stopped working, so I pulled them off. If I'd left them on the bushes, they'd be totally buried.
